Dr James Thompson treats a wide range of general urological conditions using the latest technologies and surgical techniques.
 

Dr Thompson is a surgeon with 20 years of training and experience in Medicine and Urology. He is accredited by RACS (the Royal Australasian College of surgeons), USANZ (the Urological Surgeons Society of ANZ) and AHPRA (the Australian Health Prudential Regulatory Association) as a specialist surgeon. He has been an active member of the EAU (European Association of Urology), the AUA (American Urologic Association) and BAUS (British Association of Urologic Surgeons).

Dr Thompson is a Senior Lecturer at the University of NSW and a Senior Research Fellow at the Garvan Institute of Medical Research, so you can rest assured he is up to date with the latest in diagnosis and treatment of urologic conditions. He is currently involved in more than 20 research studies in prostate, bladder and kidney cancer so that you will have the opportunity to access cutting edge treatments, many of which are not yet available elsewhere.

He is happy to assess and treat men and women with all urologic conditions, including but not limited to the following:

  • Prostate cancer including robotic surgery, nerve-sparing surgery, focal ablation therapy, brachytherapy, active surveillance;

  • Abnormal PSA screening test (i.e. a high PSA / raised PSA) and prostate cancer diagnosis with MRI-guided fusion transperineal biopsy, PSMA-PET CT and Combidex nano-particle MRI;

  • Bladder cancer including robotic surgery, nerve-sparing surgery, neo-bladder (new bladder), immunotherapy, hyperthermic chemotherapy and partial cystectomy;

  • Haematuria (i.e. blood in the urine) and bladder cancer diagnosis with multi-parametric MRI scans, blue light cystoscopy and endoscopic tumour removal;

  • Kidney cancer including robotic surgery, partial nephrectomy (removal of the lump whilst saving the rest of the kidney), multi-parametric MRI and focal ablation with cryotherapy or RFA;

  • Testis cancer and penile cancer;

  • Urinary troubles e.g. needing to pass urine more often, more urgently, at night or with slow flow;

  • Benign enlargement of the prostate and prostatitis in men, including the latest minimally invasive treatments e.g. Urolift, Rezum, Diode laser, Greenlight laser and Holep;

  • Stones of the kidney, ureter or bladder;

  • Incontinence in men and women;

  • Recurrent urinary tract infections;

  • Testicular issues e.g. varicocele, hydrocoele, epididymal cysts, low testosterone levels aka hypogonadism);

  • Vasectomy for contraception and fertility issues;

  • Erectile dysfunction and Peyronie’s disease;

  • Urethral and ureteric strictures;

  • Kidney / renal cysts.
