Prostate biopsy…

Dr Thompson performs prostate biopsy via the latest cutting edge technique, called MRI-Ultrasound fusion trans-perineal targeted biopsy. This is how it works:

1) First you undergo multi-parametric prostate MRI

2) Dr Thompson will review the MRI images and report to identify areas to target via biopsy

3) if the MRI is normal or uncertain but there remains suspicion of cancer (eg due to a rising PSA), Dr Thompson may recommend a PSMA-PET scan to identify areas to target via biopsy

4) you attend the hospital for a few hours as a day procedure, where an anaesthetist will provide a light and short general anaesthesia (ie you will be asleep for a short time)

5) Dr Thompson will overlay your MRI / PSMA images onto a live ultrasound image of the prostate via special Biojet image fusion software, then use an extremely precise 5mm grid template to direct a fine needle via the perineum (the skin behind the scrotum) into the area of concern on the scans.

This biopsy technique is h if hot accurate to determine whether there is any cancer in the prostate or not. It is much more accurate than standard trans-rectal biopsy and has an incredibly low infection rate of around 0.1-0.2%, around 20x lower than transferral biopsy.
