What is Haematuria?

Blood in the Urine, it can be either:

  • Microscopic (visible only under the microscope)

  • Macroscopic (visible to the naked eye)

Who should be referred to a urologist?

  • New Macro/Microscopic haematuria (After excluding UTI, menstruation, pseudo-haematuria)

  • Persistent haematuria 3 years after previous urologic evaluation.

What commonly causes haematuria?

  • False/pseudo haematuria (exercise, haemolytic anaemia, obstructive jaundice, beetroot, nitrofurantoin)

  • Inflammation/infection

  • Stones

  • Enlarged prostate

  • Cancer (bladder, ureter, kidney)

  • Glomerulonephritis (IgA nephropathy, thin based membrane)
